the No-Core Christmas Special

I’ve been meaning to compile a No-Core mixtape of holiday songs for several consecutive years, and finally it is done! Much thanks to those who tipped me off to some avant holiday music which I didn’t know about. This podcast is slightly different. I don’t talk in it at all. I wanted this to be a holiday music mix you could just put on at your party or family gathering. Provided they have good music taste that is. We’ve got some noise, No Wave classics and covers, lots of familiar tunes being destroyed or “reinterpreted,” even some indie rock… If I missed something let me know and maybe next year there will be a volume 2.

NO-CORE XmasX SPECIAL

This is the playlist:

1. Melvins “Toy”
Classic, from “The Bootlicker”

2. Crom-Tech “Deck the Stix”
The Mick Barr project, from a 7″ of all Christmas song covers. I included several of these.

3. The Jesus & Mary Chain “Birthday”
What do you mean this isn’t a Christmas song? Keep listening.

4. Sonic Youth “Santa Doesn’t Cop Out On Dope”
From a Geffen Records holiday album thing, a cover of a song by actor/comedian Martin Mull

5. Crom-Tech “Here Comes Mobo-Claus”

6. White Vulture “White Vulture Christmas / Christmas in Hollis”
The noise/rap project of Keith Stetson, way ahead of his time. This is from a tape he mailed to friends. Christmas in Hollis is pretty much the best Christmas song, isn’t it?

7. Excepter “Carol of the Bells”
Yup, this experimental NYC group did a Christmas album with 3 extended cover songs. This is about the first half of this track.

8. Crom-Tech “Chanukob-O-Chonkab”

9. Jon Spencer Blues Explosion “Big Yule Log Boogie”
Think this was a 7″ with another Christmas song on b-side. Their song “High Gear” is also a Christmas song..

10.  Poingly “Little Drummer Boy”
Poingly is a NYC-based solo artist who did a “War on Christmas” EP a few years back.

11. Crom-Tech “We Wish You Xmas”

12. Radio Shock “Orphans”
There’s a Radio Shock holiday album, “SnoWave,” which includes this cover of the wintertime classic by Teenage Jesus and The Jerks.

13. Archers of Loaf “Assassination on Christmas Eve”
Yeah, yeah, it’s indie rock.

14.  Crom-Tech “Clomtad is Here”

15. MX-80 “(I Spent) Christmas With The Devil”
I just got tipped off to the existence of this track a few days ago.

16. James White and The Blacks “Christmas With Satan”
Who knew No Wave legend James Chance/White did an epic Christmas track? This was a bonus track on the “Off White” CD reissue. No idea where it originally appeared.

17. The Dirtbombs “My Last Christmas”
The famous garage rock group.

Happy Holidays/Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Solstice everybody!
